about

Fourth and final volume in the Anodize Recovery series CD reissue program spotlighting the fourth tape release by unsung 80s NYC electronic duo Port Said (Stefan Tischler & Keith Keeler Walsh). Across these seven tracks there exists a continuing evolution in Tischler & Walsh's unique compositional design; a more adroit sense of rhythmic programming makes its presence known, but not at the expense of cultivating yet more compelling sounds & vision. Simply wondrous stuff.

Recovery's initial mission is making available the works of Port Said, a DIY, downtown New York City duo from the early 80s comprised of musicians Stefan Tischler & Keith Keeler Walsh. Influenced by Cluster, Harmonia, Conrad Schnitzler, Eno, and Hassell, Tischler & Walsh forged a truly unique form of multi-kulti synth music, augmented by cheapjack drum machines, assorted hand-played percussion, and vintage analog electronics, aided by the guitars of Material session player Cliff Cultreri.

A vital part of an early 80s NYC scene that embraced Laswell's proto experiments as well as Eno & Hassell's fourth-world dictum, Port Said's clutch of self-released cassettes were legendary amongst those savvy enough to catch their few live performances; their recorded legacy remains innovative to this day, and every bit as relevant beyond such fleeting contexts as 80s revivalism.

Sadly, both musicians are no longer with us, Keith Walsh passing away in 1992, Stefan Tischler in 2010. But here at Anodize, we think the legacy of these two artist's music has both stood the test of time and is more than just a simple archival footnote—there is an energy, wild abandon, and sense of creative playfulness that permeates Port Said's oblong grooves & synthetic grit.
